Finished At Last

After a grueling two weeks of studying, I am finally finished my final exams. All four of them went rather well. I was especially happy with my multimedia course. I managed to grasp a firm understanding of all the concepts in the course. My last exam was on Saturday and to top it off, my friend Steph threw a Christmas party that night. We definitely got spoiled as she spent all day baking tons of delicious treats.

I am now trying to think of ways to spend my few days off until I start work on the 4th. I have managed to keep busy the first few days by doing all my Christmas shopping. My dad, sister and I are headed up to Pemberton on the 24th to spend Christmas with our Aunt, Uncle and cousins. I'm hoping the roads stay clear so that my little Nissan Altima can make it up the Sea to Sky safely.

In other news, Pendulum is coming to Vancouver on February 22nd to play a show at the Commodore. Check them out. I'm really excited for this show.

Crunch Time

Now begins the grueling two weeks that is final exam period. I think I can speak on behalf of most students when I say that this is easily the hardest part of any semester. Usually we have to scramble until the last minute to finish up final projects, then once they are complete we must instantly start reviewing all of the material covered over the last 4 months.

The part I find hardest is staying focussed for the whole two weeks. The first few days is not that bad, but near the end my will power is usually completely depleted. To make things more enjoyable, I usually get sick around exam time, and this semester is no different. I`m just coming off of a brutal head cold. I`m glad it hit early on during finals because my harder exams will be closer to the end.

There is a light at the end of this long dark tunnel: Winter vacation. That and the fact that I won`t have any classes for 8 months as I will be doing a Co-op work term with Elasticpath. Remembering this can replenish my drive to work hard, but also can serve as a distraction as I will often stop working and daydream about all the free time I will soon have.

An update on how exams went will be coming in two weeks when I am free!

Halloween Weekend

Had a pretty good Halloween weekend, but not because I got lots of candy. Ended up finding some free time to catch up with a friend from high school I hadn't seen for a while which was nice.

It was also the first time I've done cross fit sessions back to back. I went with my cousin Gregg on Friday night at 6:30 and we did some dead lifts, ring dips and a pretty fun WOD called the Cheetah. The instructor Ainsly managed to convince us to come to the class the following morning at 9 am. The morning class was intense. Aisly gave us 2 WODs instead of the usual 1. The first one was an AMRAP 10 air squats, 10 box jumps and 10 double unders. The time limit for this WOD was 12 mins. We then had a 5 minute break (which went by much to fast) before we did another AMRAP workout. The second one consisted of 5 squat cleans, 7 push press and then 9 jack-knives. The time limit for this one was a grueling 20 minutes. I felt great after, but my legs are still killing me from these two days.

In my free time I had to study for a multimedia midterm. It didn't go to well, but hopefully I'll end up above the class average.

Here is a link for the cross fit gym I work out at. I highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for something new.

Civilization 5 Is Dangerous

A few days ago I downloaded the Civilization 5 demo on steam and I have been waiting to try it out.  I finally got the chance last night.  I have never played any of the games in the Civilization series before, but I had heard a little bit about them.  I booted up the demo and starting founding my cities.  It took me a while to figure out the controls and what I was supposed to do.  After about 30 minutes, I was really into the game.  I couldn't believe that 2 hours had passed by the time the trail was over.  The taste  I got of Civ 5 left me wanting more, but I know I will have to restrain myself for one good reason:  Civilization 5 will take up all of the free time you have!  2 hours into my game I was still producing extremely weak units and hadn't evolved my technologies much at all!  I couldn't even defeat one enemy!  I would march 5 squads of my best units up to their front gates and try to attack, but the city would lob volleys of arrows at me and tear me to pieces.  I have heard from others that a full game can last 8-10 hours easily.  Unfortunately I just don't have that kind of time to spare at the moment.  I will have to wait until the semester is over and when it does, I hope I remember to pick up this game.

First Entry Ever

So I'm not sure how often I will post entries.  I started this to practice my DOM traversal of RSS feeds.  I'm going to grab this feed and post it to my site www.mikeklem.com.
